HUCKLEBERRY JIM
1991

NEW YORK CITY
SOME BAGGAGE IS HISTORICAL

WHY NOW?

9/9/2026

Why now?

Because history has a habit of changing clothes without changing its mind.

Huckleberry Jim takes place in 1991, but it was never meant to stay there. Axel and Moses travel through a country arguing over race, language, identity, censorship and who gets to decide what other people are allowed to hear. Thirty-five years later, those arguments have not disappeared. Some have simply become louder.

The novel looks backward because sometimes that is the clearest way to see what is standing directly in front of us.

Racial hatred. Antisemitism. The casual dehumanization of people we have decided belong on the other side of something. None of it arrived yesterday. None of it belongs safely to history.

That is the unfinished business at the center of Huckleberry Jim.
This is not a novel warning about where we are going.
It is a novel about where we already are.

Publishers Weekly BookLife Editor’s Pick: “Adam Nelson’s incisive, provocative, and robustly American debut... honors the fathoms-deep American divisions that Twain marked and urges us to look closer rather than away. For readers of Percival Everett’s James and Paul Beatty’s The Sellout.”
